Enter your best guess on the average number of customers in a given safeway store per day...

The calculations in red will be done automatically.

customers per day x 19.5 in2 x 1 sheet of paper x 1 cord x 128 ft3 x 1 tree x 1817 stores = trees x 365 days = trees
1 store 1 customer 93.5 in2 90,000 sheets of paper 1 cord 283 ft3 day 1 year year

This calculation come from my receipt (below). The extra junk on my receipt occupied 6.5 inches by 3 inches of paper, or 19.5 square inches.

One cord of wood is 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet, or 128 cubic feet.

According to yahoo finance, there are 1817 Safeway stores in the country as of Jan 3, 2004.

One sheet of paper is 8.5 inches by 11 inches, or 93.5 square inches.

This is a bit of a guess on my part. I figured a tree that is 3 feet in diameter and 40 feet tall. That may not be representative of the average tree, but...

So the amount of wood (assuming 100% is used) from a tree is:
pi * 1.5 ft 2 * 40 ft, or 283 cubic feet.

According to this site one cord of wood can be made into 90,000 sheets of paper.
